Painting
There are two main paintings that are going to be described in this project. On the one hand, we have
chosen one of Murillo’s paintings: Santa Isabel curando a los tiñosos, St. Elisabeth of Hungary healing the Mangy People. It was painted in 1672 during the Spanish Golden Age and it has a religious theme. This is a very accomplished work by this virtuous artist who manages to achieve a great mastery of color and light and express dynamics in the composition. He created bright, warm, vaporous and transparent atmospheres and the structures are very original. We are analysing the characters protrayed who present kind, understanding and daily attitudes. On the other hand, we have also studied Los Frescos de Vázquez Díaz. Fresco is a technique of mural painting executed upon freshly laid, or wet lime plaster. Painted in XIX century decorating La Rabida Monastery, these paintings are of high importance within Huelva Artistic Heritage as they are dedicated to Christopher Columbus and his discovery of America. |
Sculpture
Among all the sculptures that could have been analyzed in our project, we have selected El Cristo del
Buen Viaje because of its antiquity and devotion in our city. This is a representation of a crucified christ after expiring that is an image included in the processions of Holy Thursday in Huelva Holy Week. It is an anonymous wooden sculpture made in the XVI century. Apart from this, we have also researched on another masterpiece within Huelva heritage: Silleria del Coro in Saint Claire Monastery. These are wooden made seats where the choirs, the abads and popes used to sit during the mass. We are going to describe the Sillería del Coro of the Monasterio de Santa Clara, located in Moguer, Huelva. This monastery was founded by Alfonso Jofre Tenorio in 1337, and these seats are of prime importance within this religious bulding. |
Clothes
In this project, we have been working on the old Simpecado of the Brotherhood of Almonte, which was
made in 1724 during the Baroque period. It is located in the new museum of the Shrine of El Rocio, a village situated in Huelva. It is believed that the artist who made this work was Sor Mariana del Rocio. A Simpecado is an insignia that are carried in religious processions of the Virgin. It bears the motto "sine labe concepta", or it contains an image of the Immaculate. This Simpecado presents bright gold embroidery and colored and filling stones, distributed around a central axis of symmetry. Said ornamentation is based on an argreen woven background. Among the materials used are: smooth or sample thread, twine, caracoli, mottled, giraspe, canutillo, mate and shine. |
Iron buildings
In this project, we are going to describe an iron building which is situated in Huelva, El Muelle del Tinto
(River Tinto Pier). Due to its construction and artistic style, it is known by most of the famous architects in the world. Not only is its artistic style described, but also its historical context and main characteristics. We will also get to know its architects, George Barclay and Thomas Gibson. It became a historical landmark in 2003. It is especially important because of its length (1165 metres) and the fact that it was built in order to carry the materials from the Rio Tinto Company mines in the province of Huelva between the years 1874-1876. |
